About AWL

Fondazzjoni AWis an organisation which operates in the field of poetry, interdisciplinary artistic research and collaborative events.

The name 'AWL' has been used by an informal group of artists, writers, performers and other people closely linked to the Founders since 1998, when most of these were attending courses at the University of Malta. The group organised and was involved in a number of mainly literature-related activities inside and outside of University during the period 1998-2000, as well as in writing workshops organised independently by the group. Participants in these events included Karl Schembri, Albert Gatt, Michael Zammit, Louise Ghirlando, Patrick Abela, Sandro Spina, Glen Calleja and Caldon Mercieca, and this at a time when Lidwina Schembri Wismayer had already been active for a number of years with the research theatre ensemble Groups for Human Encounter.

The first initiative in publication took place in 2002 when Eki t'eki (Calleja) and Mogħlint (Mercieca) were published by the independent publishing house 'Pubblikaturi AWL', followed by Majorkini (Mercieca, 2003), Mireddien fi Skiethom (Zammit, 2003), Għana 'l Hena (Zammit,2005), IR-RAĠEL (Calleja, 2010), eeeeeee! (Calleja, 2010) and TKEĊNIR - Kitchen work (Calleja and Elise Billiard, 2011). Furthermore, during this whole period and under the name 'AWL', the Founding Members initiated and participated in a number of multi-disciplinary projects and public cultural events through which they collaborated with several local and international artists and organisations.

AWL is currently run as follows: Glen Calleja is in charge of projects and public relations, Caldon Mercieca is developing a branch which specialises in ‘formation/education’ and Lidwina Schembri

Wismayer is responsible for logistics, administration

and ‘space’.

AWL’s legal personality is that of a

not-for-profit Foundation.
